CHOOSING YOUR PICKUPS
THE PICKUP JUNGLE
Whether you are a professional or an individual, choosing the right pickups for your guitar is not an easy task!
Sometimes it can be difficult to make a choice because of an inconsistent range of pickups, the lack of detailed specifications on retail sites, or because the pickups all seem to look the same, sometimes with minimal differences.
Often, choosing pickups comes down to trusting their reputation or their evocative name.
A RANGE THAT GOES TO THE ESSENTIALS
Following this observation, I developed a simple principle for choosing pickups: select them according to their intended use. This is how I divided my range into four distinct categories:
Bright : These pickups are wound in the mid-low range and are perfect for clean sound lovers who prioritize the attack of their guitar. They are ideal for styles of music like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Surf Rock or Funk.
Vintage Hot : This category represents the ultimate all-around pickup, offering the “normal” grain you expect from a pickup. Perfect for rock, blues, jazz and many other styles.
Heavy : Designed for use with distortion while maintaining good sonic definition. These pickups are tested with effects such as the fuzz factory to ensure a defined sound even in thick saturations. Ideal for hard rock, punk, garage, and more.
Super Heavy : The most powerful category, aimed at metal and related styles, but also offering capabilities suitable for other musical genres. These pickups offer plenty of power and definition, with a mid/low tone for flawless response to heavy saturation.
Additionally, it is possible to create custom pickups with precise specifications if these categories do not meet your needs.
